Online Community Moderator (Volunteer)

Australian Parents for Climate Action (AP4CA) is Australia’s leading organisation to engage, organise and empower parents, carers, families and everyone who cares about kids, to advocate for a safe climate for our children’s future.

With over 17,000 supporters and 25 local groups, our supporters are from across the political spectrum, in every Australian electorate, and from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. We seek non-partisan responses from government and business to climate change and its impacts.

Your volunteer work with Australian Parents for Climate Action will see you develop valuable skills and experience, make a meaningful contribution to the climate movement, and you will be working alongside like-minded people who are committed to securing a safe future for our children.

Position Details

Position title: Online Community Moderator (Volunteer)

Reports to: Social Media Team Leader

Location: Remote

Time commitment: 2 hours per week (flexible - time off can be arranged)

About this Position

We are seeking a community leader who builds the culture and experience of participants in our online platforms. In order to create the political will for effective climate action we need to build and maintain a diverse and engaged parent audience who will deliver the necessary public pressure. You will play an instrumental role in shaping the culture of our online community and will contribute to creating a space that is respectful, inclusive, solutions orientated, supportive and safe for our members.

As part of the Social Media team you will stay in contact in our online chat space (Slack), directly with the team leaders, and via monthly meetings (Zoom). You will be a key member of the organisation and will be invited to join internal discussions. You will need your own internet connection, computer / mobile device and workspace.

Roles and Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Provide leadership in our online community spaces demonstrating a commitment to our ethos, culture, values and mission for a safe climate future.

Coordination and decision making

  • Implement the online community moderation guidelines, coordinating with team members and supporters in our online spaces (e.g. the national Facebook group) to ensure the group operates within our community rules.
  • Review and moderate community member content and user profiles (either pre-, post- or reactive moderation) within our Facebook group
  • Approving new members to join our community follow our guidelines
  • Manage the banned user process, and track and remove users requiring a ban

Innovation and digital communications

  • Review the moderation guidelines and group rules and provide feedback as needed
  • Regularly feed back insights gained from community moderation into the Social Media team

Team building and collaboration

  • Participate in monthly team meetings
  • Participate in training and team development activities annually
  • Abide by our volunteer agreement and obligations under the Work, Health and Safety Act

Support provided by Australian Parents for Climate Action

  • Training and development opportunities in key skills related the the role
  • Onboarding and support to deliver your role
  • Digital tools for your role, such as Canva pro
  • Intranet assets, including our written social media moderation guidance
  • A Volunteer Manager who will be available to answer questions and provide feedback
  • And we will actively seek your feedback on how your role or other processes could be improved
